Toothbrushing timeline: Infant to big kid
INFANT
Even though your baby doesn't have teeth yet, use a soft, wet washcloth to gently wipe his gums every day. No need for toothpaste.
AROUND 4 TO 7 MONTHS
First teeth start to appear! Brush twice a day using a tiny amount (the size of a grain of rice) of fluoridated toothpaste. No need to rinse or floss.
By age 1, or within 6 months of your baby's first tooth, it's time to visit the dentist.
As soon as two teeth are touching, start flossing your child's teeth once a day.
AROUND 12 TO 26 MONTHS
Continue brushing your child's teeth twice a day. If your toddler shows interest in brushing his own teeth, let him take the lead. You'll want to supervise, and get any spots he missed.
AROUND 3 YEARS OLD
Start using a pea-size amount of fluoridated toothpaste. If your child doesn't like the taste of one toothpaste, try a different flavor. Once you think your child is ready, start teaching her how to rinse and spit.
AROUND 6 TO 8 YEARS OLD
Most children can start brushing and flossing their teeth on their own. Continue supervising your child's brushing and flossing, and lead by example!
AROUND 10 YEARS OLD
Toothbrushing independence!
Hooray!
